Civilist celebrates Berlin and 15 years anniversary with a community exhibition shot on Polaroid film

Berlin, 24.10.2024 – Renowned photographer, Civilist founder, and curator Alex Flach brings together a collective of young artists to explore the vibrant spirit of today’s Berlin through the raw and unfiltered medium of Polaroid instant photography in the upcoming exhibition, “DEAR BERLIN.”

This collaborative love letter to the home ground unfolds a kaleidoscopic panorama of Berlin's urban landscape, faces and fleeting moments offering an intimate glimpse into its vibrant subcultures. This unique collection captures Berlin’s distinct energy, emphasizing its history, diversity, and creative edge.

Opening at the international Gallery HVW8 Berlin on October 24th, the exhibition celebrates the 15th anniversary of Civilist, one of Berlin’s most iconic cultural intersections.

Celebrating 15 Years of Civilist

„DEAR BERLIN“ pays tribute to the 15th anniversary of Civilist, one of Berlin’s most iconic crossings that brings together many disciplines and people since one and a half decades. It has become a cultural hub, bridging the gap between streetwear, skateboarding, and contemporary art. Known for championing Berlin’s creative communities, Civilist embodies the DIY ethos and independent spirit that define the city’s underground culture. “DEAR BERLIN” honors this legacy, showcasing how the shop has played a central role in fostering artistic collaborations and shaping Berlin’s unique cultural identity.

A Tribute to Berlin’s Cultural Fabric

Curated by Alex Flach, the exhibition captures the essence of Berlin’s dynamic and ever-evolving landscape, celebrating the underground and avant-garde in a true ode to the city's roots. “DEAR BERLIN” encapsulates the rebellious charm of the city, from the punk music scene and skateboarding culture to contemporary art, inviting viewers to explore intimate personal stories, as seen by the collective of young artists and creatives through the lens of a Polaroid camera.

'DEAR BERLIN' is a collective effort that brings together diverse voices from our community. Through the lense of Polaroid, we showcase the authentic, unfiltered stories that make Berlin such a dynamic and inclusive city. Alexander Flach, renowned photographer, Civilist founder, and curator

About Polaroid

Polaroid was founded in 1937 by Edwin Land as an icon of innovation and engineering. The company’s launch of the Polaroid Land camera in 1947, which marked the genesis of instant photography, and subsequent introduction of the breakthrough Polaroid SX-70 camera in 1972 and many others, would firmly cement Polaroid’s standing as a technological pioneer and cultural phenomenon during its peak. However, at the turn of the century, the company would be faced with new realities surrounding digital technology’s swift rise and ceased the production of instant film in 2008. But that was short-lived; a dedicated group of instant photography fans would save the last Polaroid factory in the Netherlands under the name ‘The Impossible Project,’ paving way for the eventual rebirth of the original ‘Polaroid’ brand in the years following.

Today, Polaroid is in pursuit of unlocking the beauty in everyday life with instant photography tools that empower creators across the globe to capture meaningful moments. With recent introductions like the world’s smallest instant camera, the Polaroid Go camera, and the world’s first instant camera with built-in manual controls, the Polaroid I-2 camera, the company that we have come to know and love for over 80 years is rooted back in the spirit of analog innovation for the modern age.
